ABC Learning safe in Coffs...for now
MANY parents of young children will be relieved today to know the ABC Learning Centre in Coffs Harbour is to remain open in 2009.
It was not just those with children attending the Thompsons Road child care centre who would have been affected by the feared closure – places at other centres around the city would have become more scarce and potentially more expensive.
It must have been a difficult few weeks for those who didn't know if they would have a place for their children in 2009, and for the workers who didn't know if they would have jobs. For the Federal Government the ABC Learning crisis should be taken as a warning that it needs to look closely at the future of childcare.
Recent events have not changed the fact there are far too few places available, that places are too expensive for some people, and that child care workers are paid too little.
