Abbott throws support behind Turnbull

TONY Abbott has thrown his weight behind Malcolm Turnbull, urging other conservatives to vote for his liberal-leaning successor.

But he wouldn't mind the Defence portfolio should the Coalition win the election.

Mr Abbott told Andrew Bolt on Sky News on Wednesday night that conservative voters angry about his overthrow should not think about "getting even" by voting against the Coalition.

He also said he was "keen to serve" should Mr Turnbull consider him for inclusion in his post-election Cabinet.

Conservatives in the party are pushing for Mr Turnbull to appoint Mr Abbott to the Defence portfolio, despite the Prime Minister saying he did not plan on a re-shuffle.

Mr Abbott said he was also "perfectly happy" to simply serve as the Member for Warringah in the next term of parliament.
