A shocking smash at Christmas time

A FATAL collision near Dorrigo delivered the worst possible start to festivities on Christmas Eve.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash involving a Toyota Landcruiser and a Holden Commodore ute at Bostobrick.

When police from the Coffs/Clarence Local Area Command arrived at the scene they were confronted with the sight of the utility on fire.

The ute's driver died at the scene.

The Landcruiser's driver, a 58-year-old man, was taken to Coffs Harbour Hospital for treatment and was in a stable condition.

The only passenger in the four-wheel-drive, a 57-year-old woman, was flown by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter to the hospital and was also in a stable condition.

It is believed the Holden Commodore utility was being driven west and the Toyota Landcruiser was heading east when they collided.

The driver of the utility has not yet been formally identified, but is believed to be a man.

Investigators are appealing for anyone with information about the incident who has not yet spoken to police, to make contact.
