A local love of literature

IT was after being infected by the magic of a Global Carnival that Brian Purcell came up with the idea of the Bellingen Readers and Writers Festival.

Coming from a background with the Australia Council’s Literature Board, he immediately saw the potential for a local literary festival.

“People here are passionate about literature and it’s a long way to Byron Bay or Sydney,” Mr Purcell said

“I’ve researched festivals and here is a good place for one . . . and judging by the enthusiasm with which it’s been received, I think I’m right.”

One of the highlights of the festival will be Paddle with a Poet when guests will be treated to poetic performances as they paddle from Bellingen to Fernmount.

Tickets will be released early in 2010 but it is not too late to win a weekend pass – to enter simply sign up for the festival newsletter before December 10.
