A life of asking why earns Negus an Australia Day honour

BELLINGER Valley resident George Negus shared in the Australia Day honours when he was recognised for his service to the media as a journalist and television presenter, and to conservation and the environment.

A media colossus who has worked nationally and internationally, George Negus was bestowed as a Member of the Order of Australia.

George said he had no idea who nominated him, but said he was honoured that they held him in such high regard.

"It's rewarding because the question 'why?' has always intrigued me, even before I was a journalist," he said.

"Then I heard they pay you to ask that question and I've been asking the question. I think I've got around with one question all my life - why?

"Why do things happen? Why do people do that? Why don't they?''
