Vandals smash resort fountain

IN WHAT police have called an idiotic act of vandalism, unknown offenders have smashed a courtyard fountain at a Coffs Harbour resort, causing $3500 in damage.

Police say the attack happened at the Aanuka Beach Resort on Firman Drive at Diggers Beach on Saturday night.

Security guards found the ceramic fountain feature in pieces on the ground shortly before 10pm.

Resort staff says the courtyard centrepiece has stood outside the wedding chapel since the resort was built in the early 1980s.

It is unknown how the fountain was smashed, whether a heavy object was used or whether it was pushed over by the offenders.

Teenagers walking through the grounds of the resort are thought to have been responsible.

Coffs Clarence Police Shift Supervisor Sergeant Narelle Brooks said police officers are talking to nearby residents and guests staying at the resort to try and identify the offenders.

Anyone who saw the group of youths acting suspiciously is urged to contact Coffs Harbour Police on 6652 0299 or Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
