A fitting tribute to Helfgott

THE life and music of Bellingen's favourite son, David Helfgott, has been celebrated with the unveiling of a sculpture in his home town.

Created by acclaimed artist John Van Der Kolk, the sculpture was commissioned by Camp Creative, an annual arts festival held in Bellingen.

David's contribution to music and art in Bellingen, across Australia and internationally, is something the Coffs Coast is very proud to celebrate.

One of the world's best-loved concert pianists, Helfgott was a child prodigy who suffered a breakdown in his early life and spent time in mental institutions.

His life and struggles were depicted in the 1996 Scott Hicks film, Shine, for which Geoffrey Rush won a best actor Oscar.

Of course the sculpture is a special tribute to both David and his wife, Gillian.
