Lennox Longboard Classic set to draw a crowd

ABOUT 100 surfers will turn out for the annual Lennox Longboard Classic next weekend.

It is one of the most popular longboarding events on the Far North Coast and always runs the first weekend in August.

It also follows on from the Byron Bay and Evans Head Malibu Classic.

Former Australian champion Mike Pimm and local Ballina favourite Eric Walker are among the entries this year.

The event is now in its 18th year and is run by the Lennox Longboarders.

"We have age and gender divisions from juniors all the way through to Over-60s," event organiser Wayne Booth said.

"There are longboarders from all over the east coast of Australia coming to surf at the event.

"Eric Walker is a consistent competitor on the longboarding scene.

"Mike Pimm is a former Aussie champ and there will be a lot of talent here."

The open nine foot division is always hotly contested.

Ballina surfer Ben Dickens had a stranglehold on it in recent years, winning it more times than any other surfer.

Aaron Cooper-Smith won it last year with many surfers competing across multiple divisions.

Garrett Donovan is a two-time Australian champion and competition regular while Joel Tilley is one of the top surfers from Queensland.

Competitors come from as far as South Australia with a strong contingent from south-east Queensland

Lennox Head local Scott Channon is usually in the mix and hopeful of overcoming an ankle injury in time.

Byron Bay surfer Roisin Carolin is always a threat in the open women's division while Callum Glover has impressed in junior divisions.

Most of the surfing is on Saturday with finals set down for Sunday.

Bintang Beer is the major sponsor for third straight year with the mobile event likely to start in front of the Lennox Hotel.

Entry forms can be found on http://www.lennoxlongboarders.org.
