Turkish President not yet finished 'cleansing'

PRESIDENT Tayyip Erdogan has allowed the release of more than 750 soldiers detained since the failed July 15-16 coup, but he is not finished with his "cleansing" of the military.

With about 230 soldiers still in custody, about 40% of the country's generals and admirals dismissed and nearly 1700 personal dishonourably discharged over their alleged roles in the coup attempt, President Erdogan has turned his attention to Turkey's military academies.

He told the A Haber television service that military schools would be shut down and replaced with a national defence university, and the armed forces put under the command of the defence minister.
