Former leader slams NSW social housing performance

A FORMER New South Wales premier has described the current State Government's social housing performance as the worst in the country.

Nick Greiner told a government-run forum in Sydney that the state's social housing situation had barely improved since he left office as a Liberal premier in 1992.

"In this area, social housing, we are not number one and we are very much closer to number six, and if you count the territories, we are very much closer to number eight, " he said.

Mr Greiner said both sides of politics had failed to implement constructive change and were more "worried about failure" than looking for innovative solutions.

He said getting the private sector involved in social housing was the only way NSW could improve its dire situation.

"The private sector is frankly busting to help and without it, you won't get significant progress," he said.

There were almost 60,000 people on NSW's social housing waiting list in June 2014, and there has been an 11% decrease in the state's public housing stock over the past decade. -APN NEWSDESK
