Coffs population tops 70,000

COFFS Harbour's population has passed the 70,000 mark with the city recording one of the highest growth rates in the State outside Sydney.

Figures just released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics for 2007-08, show the city had 70,371 residents at June 30, 2008, an increase of 1300 or 1.9 per cent on the previous year.

This was well above the state average population growth rate of 1.1 per cent.

Regionally, Bellingen's population was 13,153, up 0.6 per cent and Nambucca Shire's population 18,921, up 0.7 per cent.

In 2001, Coffs Harbour had a population of 63,000 people and is expected to reach the 100,000 mark by 2030.

At June 2008, around 20 per cent of the NSW population (1.38 million people) lived in coastal local government areas.
