IT'S a sad time for Game of Thrones fans.

For 10 weeks of the year, Thrones fans obsess over every little detail and plot rumour surrounding the popular series.

With season six culminating with a memorable finale last week fans will be scouring their TV guides for shows that will fill the Tyrion-shaped void in their hearts.

The below shows are either available to stream, on free-to-air TV or readily available on DVD or blu-ray.

Vikings

Plot: Tells the story of Viking Ragnar Lothbrok's journey from farmer and family man to King of Denmark.

SHOW TIME: From Vikings to Outlander and House of Cards there are plenty of shows to watch until Game of Thrones returns.
SHOW TIME: From Vikings to Outlander and House of Cards there are plenty of shows to watch until Game of Thrones returns.

With less blood and sex than GOT, this action-packed series stars Aussie Travis Fimmel as Ragnar Lothbrok.

Beautifully shot, it has plenty of warfare to keep action fans happy but also takes the time to develop its story of family and brotherhood.

Outlander

Plot: While on a honeymoon in Scotland, a former army nurse stumbles on a gateway to the past and falls in with a band of Highland rebels.

More romantic than GOT, this popular series is based on the historical time travel novels by Diana Gabaldon and is developed by Battlestar Galactica showrunner Ronald D Moore. Second World War nurse Claire Randall finds herself transported back to Scotland in 1743 where she meets dashing Highland warrior Jamie Fraser and becomes caught up in the Jacobite Uprising.

The Last Kingdom

Plot: Abducted by a Viking warlord after his father is slain in battle, a young orphan adopts the Norse way of life until tragedy befalls his new family.

Less flashy than GOT and more sombre in tone,The Last Kingdom is an adaptation of the best-selling novels by Bernard Cornwell.

Set in 9th century Britain, it tells the story of Uhtred whose loyalties are tested when he is forced to choose between the country of his birth and the people of his upbringing.

Spartacus

Plot: The story of Thracian gladiator Spartacus, who led a slave uprising against the Roman Republic.

This violent, bloody retelling of the familiar Spartacus tale goes for the jugular in spectacular fashion.

Starring the late Andy Whitfield as Spartacus before Liam McIntyre took over the role, it tells the story of the slave who turned on his captors to seek vengeance. If slow-mo fight sequences, bawdy sex and togas are your thing then look no further.

House of Cards

Plot: A Congressman works with his equally conniving wife to exact revenge on the people who betrayed him as he seeks a path to the Oval Office.

If GOT's political machinations keep you entertained then watching the charming, cunning Kevin Spacey as American politician Frank Underwood will be right up your alley.
