42% of Australians approve of Tony Abbott

SUPPORT for Prime Minister Tony Abbott has surged to 42%, up four points since July, on the back of increased debate on national security issues.

The Fairfax Ipsos poll released Monday, which replaces the Nielsen poll, found Mr Abbott's personal disapproval rating also fell seven points to 49%.

Opposition leader Bill Shorten's approval rating also rose two points since July to 43% and his disapproval rating fell four points to 40% in the latest poll.

The poll also showed a narrowing of Labor's two-party preferred lead, down three points since July to 51%, compared with the Coalition's, up three points over the same period to 49%.

While Mr Abbott's support has surged since national security and the Islamic State began dominating political media coverage, the poll also found most people did not like planned higher education reforms.

The poll revealed some 64% of respondents rejected the deregulation of the university fee market, and only 28% supported it.

That result comes as the government struggles to get the Senate on side to pass its reforms, with Labor, The Greens and the Palmer United Party still opposed to the changes.
