$4 million upgrade to cancer institute underway
A PROGRAM to upgrade radiation therapy equipment at Mid North Coast Cancer Institute centres at Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie is underway, with the first of four planned installations completed this week.
The $4-million upgrade includes the installation of a more advanced beam-shaping device, known as a multi leaf collimator, and a new control system.
Updated imaging software is also being installed and staff trained in its use.
The first of Coffs Harbour's two linear accelerators has now been upgraded and staff began treating patients using the new equipment this week.
MNCCI chief radiation therapist Stuart Greenham said the upgrade enhances the delivery of radiation therapy treatment which will result in shortened treatment times for patients.
"Continuing to embrace new technology such as this ensures we are able to provide the highest quality health service to our patients," Mr Greenham said.
Coffs Harbour's second linear accelerator will be upgraded in coming weeks before work begins on the first of two linear accelerators at the Port Macquarie centre.
The entire upgrade program is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
