2015 Mazda MX-5 priced from $31,990

MAZDA has announced pricing for its new fourth generation MX-5 roadster, starting at $31,990 before on-roads and on sale here in mid-August.

Incredibly, that price represents a mere $2,000 increase over the first generation MX-5's 1989 Australian launch price of $29,990.

While you shudder at the figures, you can rejoice in the news that the Australian price of the world's favourite sports car is practically the same as a quarter of a century ago.

Using the RBA's inflation calculator, that 1989 price is the equivalent of just under $60,000 in today's money, highlighting how keenly manufacturers need to price their products in today's highly saturated and competitive marketplace.

Mazda's rear-wheel drive roadster's price point will prove attractive to younger drivers who deem rear seats an irrelevance, and may even pull some buyers away from the brilliant Toyota 86, another bargain sports car with power delivered to the rears.

Speaking of power, from launch the entry-level MX-5 Roadster and top-spec Roadster GT will feature specially tuned 1.5-litre petrol engines with choice of six-speed manual or auto, offering 96kW and 150Nm of torque to push the 1,009kg soft-top along. Incidentally, that makes the new car just 59kg more than the 1989 MX-5, despite all its modern kit.

Late in the year a 2.0-litre offering will be added to the MX-5 lineup, sure to add further performance appeal to this modern classic.
