'20 minutes as good as any' - Beams on that Lions opening

AFL: He was an integral member of Collingwood's premiership-winning team in 2010.

But Dayne Beams says the footy played by his young Brisbane Lions side on Saturday in QClash 13 was some of the best he's been involved in.

The Lions jumped from the blocks at Metricon Stadium, with the first seven goals of the game.

"Our first 20 minutes was unbelievable," the new skipper said.

"I've played a fair bit of footy and played in some successful sides, and that 20 minutes of footy was as good as I've played in.

"It was a really good start to the game."

Beams, who won the Marcus Ashcroft Medal as best-afield with 28 disposals, was just as impressed with his team managing to hold on as the Suns stormed home.

The hosts level the scores in the final term, before the visitors recorded a two-point win.

The defence felt the pressure late but held firm.

"Harris Andrews and the boys down back did an enormous job to stand up under that type of pressure, so a really big tick for those guys," he said.

"Across the board I thought we defended really well.

"We're still heavily in a learning phase and we'll learn from that second half on Saturday.

"We'll make sure we try and rectify a few things, whether that be just slow the ball down and control the footy a bit to take that momentum away, but we'll have a look more in depth to see what we can do there."

The Lions will be back on the controversial Gabba deck when they host Essendon on Saturday night.

"It looks in pristine condition, so it'll be good to get back out there again," Beams said.
