$20m drug syndicate leader arrested on Hamilton Island

A 41-YEAR-OLD man linked to a major south each Queensland drug operation appeared in the Mackay Magistrates Court today.

Khac Dung Nguyen is charged with trafficking and supplying marijuana and possessing hydroponic equipment for producing dangerous drugs.

Nguyen was arrested on Hamilton Island earlier this week andcharged with trafficking and supplying under the Vicious Lawless Associate Disestablishment Act 2013.

A Vietnamese interpreter was needed for Nguyen's court appearance.

She read out the charges to him after he'd been formally charged by Magistrate Ron Muirhead.

He is one of 41 people arrested on 114 charges during Operation North  Genie that netted $20.6 million worth of drugs.

Operation North Genie ran over the past six months, with officers executing 33 search warrants and locating 20 properties which had been converted into hydroponic cannabis grow houses.

The drugs that were seized as part of the operation, include over 3,800 hydroponic cannabis plants, over 100 bush cannabis plants, approximately 46kg of dry cannabis and an amount of cocaine.

In addition to the drugs seized, there was also over $2,200,000 in property recovered by police, including over $800,000 in cash.

As part of the operation police located a warehouse at Acacia Ridge filled to the rooftop with equipment believed to be worth about $1.3million and used solely for growing marijuana.
