$100 million resort for Emu Park

THE Capricorn Coast has seen nothing like this in 30 years.

In fact, if the proposal for this five-star resort development on Haven Road in Tanby Point, Emu Park, is approved by council, it will be the highest-rating resort in the region, and one of few in Queensland.

Developers Moondaze have unveiled plans for a $100 million five-star resort, called The Pearl Resort, at Tanby Point in Emu Park.

Having waded though the global financial crisis, Moondaze has revisited previously council-approved plans for a 120-unit development.

If this new design is approved, Moondaze is promising to go full steam ahead with what has been cited as the next Capricorn Resort and Great Keppel Island.

Moondaze has submitted a material change of use for the resort to 201 units, with a total of 333 bedrooms, commercial space, a high-class restaurant, conference centre, lounge bar, indoor sports facility and health spa retreat.

Developer Harry Nicol yesterday said the company had revised the plans and “raised the benchmark” of architecture to suit the operators and the tourism market, without exceeding the size.

“We are looking at a five-star signature accreditation and Queensland Tourism-recognised the Capricorn Coast has not had any form of resort development for a long time,” he said.

“The major thing from the operators was a few years ago, people didn’t necessarily want one-bedders, now there is an awful lot of single couples.

“What we have done is taken the development and broken it up and given it an internal rehash.”

The Haven Road site has one large Balinese-type hut from a previous approved “wellness” resort scheme. 

Capricorn Tourism and Economic Development chief executive Mary Carroll yesterday said it was exciting to see the “sensible development” which complmented the area.

It would fill the need for 975 new rooms by 2017 for current and future demand.

“The approval by council would certainly confirm the business confidence that we are starting to see increase on the cap coast as a destination,” she said.
