Top dancers in Coffs for festival

TOP dancers from New York, Los Angeles, Canada and New Zealand are in Coffs Harbour this week for the 2009 Utopian Dream Dance Festival based at the Showground.

Among the top dancers in town are hip hop choreographer Mr Swoop, who visitors will recognise from the Austen Powers movies and Madonna's Sticky and Sweet tour; Csaba Szirmai from Dancing; oversized gentle giant Ill Will, the breaker from the Bronx and ballet dancer and choreographer Jason Winters for Cirque du Soleil.

There will be performances every night in addition to the daily program of classes and workshops.

Last night saw the Choreographers Demo with all the guest artists performing.

Tonight at 8pm is Open Floor night at the Showground Exhibition Centre when people can demonstrate their performances. Entry $15, conc. $10.

Tomorrow night will be the Contemporary Treats show at the Botanic Garden at 8pm with American ballet dancer and choreographer Jason Winters and his company performing. Entry $20, conc. $15.

Thursday at 8pm will see the Bringing the Heat show, a Latin fiesta at Pacific Bay Resort which will include drumming and fire dancing.

Saturday will see Soul Duel national battles and Sunday will see the Utopian Dream Dance Expo, the final showcase of the festival with special guest artists $15, conc. $10.

Both these events will be at the Showground Exhibition Centre.

Directed by Travers Ross and co-ordinated by Ashleigh and Julie Ross, Utopian Dream runs from January 5 to 10 and brings a summer smorgasbord of dance opportunities to the city.
