Halfback battle for Rabbitohs

THE competition for the vacant South Sydney halfback job is heating up with BCU International Stadium a key battleground this Saturday night.

Rabbitohs' young guns Adam Reynolds and Ryan Carr will be desperate to impress in the club's NRL Trial match against the New Zealand Warriors with both players determined to make the number seven spot their own.

While many have tipped Reynolds to have the inside running for the starting job come the Rabbitohs' round one clash against the Roosters on March 5, Maguire has yet to rule out Carr.

Although giving Reynolds the start against the Warriors, South Sydney coach Michael Maguire plans to give both players equal game time in the halfback role on Saturday and in the Charity Shield on February 18.

''Don't read too much into Adam starting,'' Maguire said.

''It's still a battle between he (Reynolds) and Ryan (Carr). They've both represented themselves very well in pre-season training and they both did well in the game against Warrington.

''There's every chance they'll both play in the Charity Shield against the Dragons as well, so it probably won't become clear who's going to be named halfback for the first round until after that game.''
