READY TO SHOW-OFF: vast interiors new owner Heidi Brett.
DECIDING to become part of the VAST network was an easy decision for Heidi Brett, the new franchisee of the business's Coffs Harbour outlet.
"I have known VAST founder Ross Clayton since school and later on when my husband and I built a castle in Crossmaglen I kept going there for furnishings," Ms Brett said.
"Becoming a franchisee now is a lot about circumstances because my children are older and the time is right but also because it's nice to be able to be part of a business I have always loved."
Ms Brett said she was also attracted to the group's focus on sustainability and ethos of helping local communities.
"We import mainly from India, China and Vietnam and have a variety of styles including antiques.
"In spite of the economy I have been surprised to discover there are still plenty of people searching for something beautiful and unique."
Much of VAST's Indian furniture is made from mango wood, which - until the business showed an interest in it - was being burnt as waste.
"Previously older mango trees were being cut down and burnt - now the timber is used to make furniture, which means the supply is reliable and sustainable."
Ms Brett says her own touches will become apparent in April when stock she has ordered will have arrived - hopefully.
"I am planning a relaunch then to showcase the new pieces and crossing my fingers everything arrives on time.
"As an importer one is always subject to the vagaries of transport - just recently five containers that were supposed to arrive between December and January all arrived in one week."
She says she has certainly jumped in the deep-end but is finding it very energising and loving every minute.
