Sian Bignall shows disabled surfers Bree, Luke and Corey why a visit to the Pet Porpoise Pool means having friends for life.
WHEN the Rotary Club of Coffs Harbour Daybreak was distributing proceeds from the 2011 Jetty Ocean Swims, some money wound up with Coffs Coast Disabled Surfers.
And organising committee member Dr Frank Hold said it was one of the best decisions they made.
"The association were able to purchase medals and certificates for the 30 or 40 kids who regularly take part in surf carnivals," he said.
"For one young bloke it's been extra special, as he's so proud of his medal it's very difficult to get him to take it off. These are the reasons why the swims are so vital to the community and I urge those who are going to take part to get entries in as soon as possible."
This week some of the disabled kids headed to the Pet Porpoise Pool to continue their swim training.
"Perhaps some of the more advanced will take part in the 250m swim but for those who can't, we'll try to arrange them to meet the visiting Bondi Rescue boys," Dr Hold said.
"The kids love the event and we love having them involved also."
The 2012 Beachside Radiology Coffs Coast Ocean Swims will be held on Sunday, March 6, at Coffs Jetty Beach.
Apart from the 250m charity swim, the Bondi lifeguards will mix with local and visiting ocean swimmers in the 2000m long course and 600m short course events.
Entries are open, with registrations recommended online by going to www.coffsoceanswims.com.
Apart from the major prizes, all entrants become eligible for the range of random draws of travel and holiday prizes being given out at the presentation ceremony following the event.
