“FREEDOM from Fear” is the theme of this year’s Refugee Week which runs from June 19-25.

Marking the occasion is the Australian Refugee Film Festival which will screen at Jetty Memorial Theatre on Friday, June 24, at 6.30pm.

The Australian Refugee Film Festival highlights important refugee-related issues, recognises the indomitable spirit of refugees and celebrates their achievements through personal stories.

This year’s short films look at:

The environmental effects of climate change causing people to leave their homes;

The refugee journey and its associated obstacles;

Personal triumphs – the stories of former refugees and asylum seekers; and

The work carried out with refugees and asylum seekers by local and international organisations.

Refugee Week, which has been celebrated in Australia since 1986, aims to create a culture of welcome, and enable refugees to feel safe while acknowledging the valuable contribution they make to Australian society.

In addition to the films, there will be dance and music performances by former refugees from the Coffs Harbour community. Refreshments featuring a multicultural theme will be provided by the Cultural Cafe.

The Film Festival is free but tickets are required and can be obtained online at www.jettytheatre.com.au or from the Box Office on 6652 8088.

Parental guidance is recommended for young children as the content of some films may be confronting.
