THE Coffs Coast is about to get two new radio services.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has made FM frequency 90.7 MHz available for the introduction of the ABC radio service NewsRadio to the local area.

The coverage range of the service includes Coffs Harbour, Grafton and Kempsey.

ACMA chairman, Chris Chapman, said the decision to make a frequency available for the ABC NewsRadio service in the Coffs Coast region was made as part of the government’s broader plan to extend this ABC service to all areas of Australia with a population of 10,000 or more.

“The commencement of this service is scheduled for 2012 as part of phase three of the ABC’s rollout of NewsRadio,” Mr Chapman said.

“The ABC NewsRadio service will be a significant addition to the media landscape of this region.”

Mr Chapman said the ACMA would also make spectrum available for a new community radio broadcasting service to serve Coffs Harbour.

It will operate on FM frequency 94.1 MHz.

“Additionally, the ACMA will make a new FM frequency available to the commercial radio broadcasting service 2CH, to rectify deficient coverage in the town of Woolgoolga to the north of Coffs Harbour,” he said.

This translator service will operate on FM frequency 100.5 MHz.
