COFFS Harbour is being asked to rise to the challenge and become part of the GenerationOne movement – a campaign for all Australians to eliminate indigenous poverty and disadvantage in our lifetime.
The project aims to ensure that this is the last generation of indigenous Australians not to have the same opportunities as the rest of the community. Launched earlier this year, GenerationOne is financed by a number of business leaders and supported by prominent Australians, including Coffs Harbour’s own Russell Crowe and Jack Thompson.
“GenerationOne is different from previous attempts to fix this problem because it isn’t just calling on governments to act, it’s calling on business, government and all Australians to act,” said Deputy Mayor, Councillor Bill Palmer.
“It’s a national campaign, but it really needs local support – your support.”
The GenerationOne bus, which has been travelling around Australia, is making a special stop at Novotel Pacific Bay Resort in Coffs Harbour on May 20 for the launch to meet with businesses and individuals who want to be a part of the campaign.
There are a number of ways to help:
Pledge a Job: Organisations commit to provide real jobs to Indigenous people who are suitably qualified. The Australian Employment Covenant (AEC) links businesses with relevant assistance such as training or mentoring.
Mentor a youth.
Join the movement and spread the word.
The Coffs Harbour launch event will be a sumptuous breakfast with bush tucker influences, as a joint venture between Yuraal Bush Tucker Café at Red Rock and Novotel Pacific Bay Resort.
