Police cordoned off a villa at Coffs Harbour’s Clog Barn Caravan Park following the alleged assault.

COFFS Harbour man Shain Williams yesterday appeared in court charged with the murder of a man violently beaten with a baseball bat at a local caravan park last year.

Police allege Williams, 27, formerly of Vincent Street, struck the 59-year-old with the bat multiple times to the head and body during a heated dispute in the early hours of October 23.

The victim later died of his injuries in Sydney’s Royal North Shore Hospital. Police arrested Williams in Coffs Harbour just hours after the alleged assault.

Charged with murder and a count of causing grievous bodily harm to a person with intent, Williams appeared in the dock yesterday for a brief court hearing. His legal defence withdrew a plea for bail in December last year and since his arrest, the accused has been held in custody at the Grafton Correctional Centre.

Police will allege Williams inflicted serious injuries on the victim which led to his death.

The court has been told officers attended Coffs Harbour’s Clog Barn Caravan Park at 2.45am that morning following reports of an assault and complaints there had been a loud domestic dispute inside a holiday villa.

The male victim was found at the scene suffering severe head trauma.

A crime scene was established and investigations led detectives to a business in South Coffs later that morning where Williams was arrested.

It’s believed crown prosecutors will push to have the case committed to the NSW Supreme Court, once a brief is served and the accused has entered a plea.

Williams has been remanded in custody to reappear in the Coffs Harbour Local Court on April 13.
