COFFS Harbour trainer Brett Bellamy had the rare distinction of training the first four horses past the post in the Coates Hire Maiden Handicap during yesterday’s Coffs Harbour TAB meeting.

When War Machine, Looks Like Hayil, Sticky Toffee and Figure flashed past the post Bellamy was the toast of the track but he admitted that he had a very good chance of getting a winner up in that particular race.

“It helps when I have six out of a field of 12,” he humbly admitted.

Settling to the back of the field after jumping from an outside gate, jockey Raymond Spokes swept the three-year-old towards the outside fence once the field rounded the home turn and found a fast lane to sweep past the field and Figure which led the field into the straight but stayed to the inside rail.

“The outside was definitely the right choice but I had no other place to go neither,” Spokes said of the ride.

“I would’ve went there anyway but I’m glad Brett’s other horses stayed to the inside rail or I mightn’t have got them.”

By Clang, Bellamy was always confident that the gelding would be able to get through the heavy going yesterday, it was a simply a matter of how much he’d grown up before he picked up his first win.

“He’s always been a slow maturer,” Bellamy said.

“You look at him side on and he looks alright but you look at him back on he’s only very narrow but they tell me that’s a trait with the Clang’s.”

Bellamy also added that it was a sentimental win for his stable’s leading jockey as Spokes had put a lot of work into War Machine since he came into the stable.

“Ray has educated this horse from a baby and he’s given him a hell of a lot of grief over a period of time so having Ray ride him for his first winner was probably just desserts for all of the hard work that he’s put in on him over the last 12 or 18 months.”
