THE heavy rain has eased in NSW after thunderstorms and torrential downpours caused problems for hundreds of residents over the weekend.

The State Emergency Service responded to close to 1600 requests for assistance between Friday evening and 10.30pm (AEDT) on Sunday, with leaking roofs and fallen trees causing the most problems.

By Monday morning, there were only 80 outstanding jobs left, mostly on the northern NSW coast, a SES spokesman told AAP.

Heavy rain predominantly fell in the north eastern quarter of the state over the weekend, while residents on Sydney's north shore also copped a significant amount of the deluge.

Bellingen and Nambucca, on the far north coast of NSW, recorded between 50mm and 70mm of rain between 9am on Sunday and 6am on Monday.

Conditions eased on Sunday night, with light rain forecast for Monday in limited areas of western Sydney, and on the far north and mid north coast.

"It's much much less than what we had on Sunday," a Bureau of Metrology spokesman told AAP.

Significant rainfall is expected for the central part of the state on Monday, he added.

"It's mostly central western slopes and plains, upper western and lower western districts."
