Friends welcome at Sawtell cinema

The Friends of Sawtell Cinema are welcoming new members with open arms.

THERE’S nothing better than supportive, loyal friends to help you through tough times – just ask Sawtell First Avenue Cinema.

After the devastation of severe flood damage in 2009, the cinema had to work hard to rebuild and remain as Coffs Harbour’s only locally owned, independent cinema.

In June of last year, the Friends of Sawtell Cinema was born. Its aim was to established and encourage an active and diverse film community on the Coffs Coast to support the local, independent cinema.

So far the ‘Friends’ campaign has been hugely successful. It now has 128 members who have organised extra publicity for special screenings and monthly events.

“A survey recently completed by members shows residents of Sawtell, Coffs Harbour and nearby towns really appreciate their historic cinema,” ‘Friends’ vice president Sue Seaton said.

They love it so much; the Friends of Sawtell Cinema have visited the movies twice as regularly as the national average in 2009.

“Survey results also indicate the public especially appreciates the First Avenue Cinema screening of foreign language and art house films as well as Australian films,” Ms Seaton said.

“If you enjoy films, why not get out more often by joining us each month?”

The next event will be held at the cinema on Friday, February 12, for the film Departures.
