Raymond Munro says lives of people with disabilities has improved.
RAYMOND Munro has been advocating for people with disabilities for more than 30 years.
In that time he has seen attitudes change, equipment and technology improve the lives of many, and many disabled friends find employment or pursue education.
“There is no doubt things have changed a lot for the better,” Mr Munro said.
“I’ve been in a wheelchair for 56 years and my first chair was one of those big old wooden chairs with wicker backs – they’re in museums now.”
Back then shops had steps and footpaths didn’t have ramps for crossing.
Big changes really started in 1981, the International Year of the Disabled, which saw the small Recreational Sports Club for the Disabled in Coffs Harbour launch celebrations ahead of anyone else.
“We were light years ahead of everyone – especially the government bodies, who asked us to help launch all the communities up and down the coast.”
Today is the International Day for People with DisAbilities and while there is cause for celebration Mr Munro said attitudes remain the biggest roadblock for disabled people.
“Our biggest handicap, the thing that stops us being able to do what others do, is still other people’s attitudes.
“The 1981 bumper sticker – ‘your attitude is my handicap’ still applies.”
Celebrations in the Coffs community will actually take place tomorrow from 10am at Sportz Central. There will be guide dog displays, special awards, and lunch and morning tea supplied.
