IF all goes well, fibre-optic broadband may be in your home some time next year.

Having been encouraged by communications minister Stephen Conroy in October, Southern Cross University together with Coffs Harbour and every other council between Taree and the Tweed, is putting in a submission to be the first mainland site for the new National Broadband Network.

Southern Cross University’s Professor Peter Croll is overseeing the submission, which he said was a great opportunity.

“We would see a revolution,” Prof Croll told the Coffs Coast Advocate.

“Regional Australia will gain more than urban areas from broadband. This region is a very high growth area.”

He said the submission focused on the benefits the new technology would bring to health care, education, creative industries and emergency services.

“SCU research shows older people are moving away to be closer to health care. Having better services and better social connectedness would help reduce depression and help stop the population drift to cities.”

He said the submission was due before Christmas.

And local businesses can help: Go to http://www.gobroadband.org.au/ and answer a short survey to support the broadband bid.

and at wha cost ?
having access to the internet is way overpriced as it is
the only benifit would be for businesses (and government organisations) , a 20 mbit connection is huge for the average home user , thats what im on thanks to iprimus and optus , Telstra dont even come close for either speed , dl limits or price. I cant see how having access to fibre optics is going to be better for us other than another expense, has anyone seen the state of our roads or state of our hospitals ? wouldnt the money invested in the nbn project be better off spent elsewhere,,businesses arnt going to lower thier prices because they have access to faster internet , infact i think they will increase prices to cover the extra expense of a faster internet(this technology is not cheap )
so once again us the public will pay for something we more than likley wont use
although what we do need is money spent on infrastructure

Oh boo hoo young. I'd gladly pay for internet access that isn't from the stone age. If you don't want it, dont go online.

splendourman , please do yourself a favor and actually read and understand what i wrote , i have a 20mbit connection which is very far from stoneage mate ,incase you dont know its roughly 20 million bits per second (or about 357 times faster than dial-up)and capable of streaming hdtv,What i am saying is why ,as home users, do we need anything faster and at greater expense than what we allready have , wouldnt they be better off expanding on the current adsl so all aussies can have it?

I might point out that many parts of Coffs arent able to use many of the boradband services others take for granted. We had an Optus broadband account at Sapphire but when we moved near to Coramba Optus just said "sorry, we can't give you a broadband account out there", as if we were at Bourke. It's not until you get out of the CBD you realise we are a regional area with regional issues concerning telecommunications and access to services.

what are you going on about, a quick search of the internet and you will see coramba has access to adsl2 broadband services ( i think there was even a story in the coffs coast advocate about coramba getting it)
just because 1 company doesnt offer it doesnt mean that there isnt a company that will do it for you
yes we are in a regional area and the services that are around reflect that, what else would you expect,
also boambee is along way from coramba , i gather it must have been awaile ago (not within the last 12 months as coramba exchange was upgraded )
ITS ALL ABOUT CHOICES .YOU CHOSE TO LIVE IN AN AREA WITHOUT THIS SERVICE SO DONT COMPLAIN WHEN YOU CANT GET IT..Do you really think that any company will spend crap loads of money on infrastructure that will take them many many years to get back,,chanches are you wont get it , and our government is all about user pays
