Hot summer, here we come

THE predictions are that this summer is going to be hotter than usual - but the Bureau is hedging its bets on whether it will be a dry or wet one.

TODAY marks the arrival of summer and all the predictions are it is going to be a hotter than usual one, according to the latest seasonal outlook on the Bureau of Meteorology website.

However, the met service is hedging its bets on whether it will be a dry, or wet, one.

The chances of exceeding the seasonal median temperatures are close to 50/50, with no strong shifts in the odds pointing to either a wetter or drier than normal summer, the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) said.

The warm Pacific (El Nino) biases the climate toward below-average rainfall, however the warm Indian Ocean counteracts this, by promoting above-average falls in the same areas.

“Lately, sea surface temperatures on the Mid North Coast have been above average and that is providing more moisture to the atmosphere, which could produce heavier-than-usual rainfall events,” BoM climate services manager Clinton Rakich said.

The met service is slightly more positive about its temperature predictions. The latest forecast states that summer will see higher-than-average temperatures hit the region and it predicts between 60 to 80 per chance of increased overnight warmth.
