THE initial reaction to Tony Abbott's election as Liberal leader was mostly negative on the online social media network twitter.
A few positive comments surfaced as the day progressed, however the reaction remained overwhelmingly negative to Mr Abbott winning the leadership vote.
Most of the action on the network was concentrated around the '#abbott' and '#spill' twitter trends. Here is a selection of the thousands of tweets posted by 1700 AEDT:
stewartsmith: searching for 'abbott' on twitter is hilarious: not a single good (or even just not abusive) tweet about him.
HaysMouth: Abbott is only slightly more popular with voters than Tuckey. The coalition is now in its death throws
voodles: Is Mark Textor no longer with Liberals? Surely they no how badly Abbott will play out in the electorates
hello_ellery: Never thought I'd see the day where Tony Abbott is both (a) leader of the Libs and (b) a trending topic on Twitter!!
ThommyBee: Word is Tony Abbott promised his supporters no more shots in speedos if they voted for him as leader.... Amen to that.
karlroby: Tony Abbott as new Liberal leader is a disaster for the country. Climate deniers shame shame shame.
gga: I can't be the only one who thinks Abbott winning is brilliant? I mean, think of the jokes, and the oncoming train-wreck.
MediaMook: Tony Abbott? Tony Abbott!!! This is even funnier than when the Libs made Brendan Nelson leader.
paulvoulas: I am still in shock that the libs voted Abbott as their leader. Liberals will be in the political wilderness for years to come
WaltzingTilly: Actually, gd strategy Joe. Everyone will HATE Abbott and he'll get knifed. Then you just waltz in and take over
makiwa: Congratulations Tony Abbott. Australia needs more people of conviction like you in parliament and fewer all spin but empty show-ponies!
VinceOZ: Abbott comes out fighting: Victorious At last, a leader that proper Liberals can believe in, not some pale imitatio...
dannyhanes: Tony Abbott will be a great man for leading the Liberal Party.
safarik: Tony Abbott is the Steven Bradbury of Australian politics.
And here are some tweets from fellow politicians:
Alex Hawke (Lib backbencher) - Looking forward to seeing Tony Abbott take up the fight to Kevin Rudd.
Scott Morrison (Lib Shadow Minister for Housing) - congratulates Tony Abbott - Libs will give the planet the benefit of the doubt but not Kevin Rudd
Bob Brown (Greens Leader) - The far-right has control of the Abbott coalition. Rudd Labor is giving the corporate polluters $24 billion of your money. Go Green.

The extremist have taken over the Liberal party. They don't believe in climate change that is for sure. The Liberals & the Nationals will deservably be thrashed at the next election.

I phoned today to congratulate Tony Abbott. Having run against him in two federal elections (2004 and 2007) as an Independent, and having debated him on numerous occasions, I have come to know him quite well. It is no secret that our views are somewhat different and our public debates rather passionate, perhaps even heated. However, we share an earnest and deep respect for one another. He always accepted an invitation to debate me, which demonstrates strength and spine (refusing to debate a political opponent reeks of cowardice), he was always respectful towards me, and on more than one occasion, was extremely kind and thoughtful towards me. I think that he will make a strong Opposition Leader and formidable opponent in the lead-up to the next election. I wish him all the best.

"Good". We now have something resembling an opposition party!
Has anyone read about the climate change scandal which is now being played out in the British Parliament? Seems like a top British climate change Scientist has been cooking the books on climate change and feeding mis-information to the Government in order to bring about an ETS.
Kinda reminds you of the Weapons of Mass Destruction mis-information con we got suckered into a few years ago.
Tony Abbott is the only one who is willing to stand up and challenge all these sheep herding politicians.
