WORK on the upgrade of the Urunga foreshores is due to start after the Christmas holidays.
The area is managed by the Bellinger Heads Holiday Parks Trust, on behalf of the NSW Department of Lands, and redevelopment plans were displayed to the community in 2007.
According to Trust administrator, Geoff Firkin, the redevelopment application was lodged with the Bellingen Shire Council in September 2008 with approval being received in July this year.
“That’s four months ago,” Mr Firkin said.
“Since then we’ve been working on the designs and we have now called for tenders.
“We plan to begin in February, which is traditionally a quiet trade month.”
Mr Firkin said the redevelopment plans included a new car park opposite the Ocean View Hotel linked to the current boardwalk car park by a cycle/walkway.
“We are starting with upgrading public access. The car park at the boardwalk will be extended to include a turning area for coaches.”
He said plans for the foreshore area next to the Lido remained flexible, pending a final decision about the position of the tidal pool by the council and the community.
The council’s general manger, Mike Colreavy, said any redevelopment of the Lido would involve much more than just simply dredging the area.
“We have to decide what is wanted and where it will go,” Mr Colreavy said.
“After the recent flood experiences we also have to consider very carefully the value for money that any dredging offers.”
