Two children died in this accident in Kempsey on Thursday evening.
TWO young people have died and two others left critically injured after a horrific smash at Kempsey.
Police said about 7.40pm on Thursday, a grey 2004 Mazda 3 sedan was driven east on North Street at West Kempsey when it left the road and slammed into a power pole.
Two backseat passengers, a 15-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl, died at the scene.
The 16-year-old female driver and 14-year-old male front-seat passenger sustained critical injuries and were treated at the scene by paramedics before they were flown to Newcastle’s John Hunter Hospital.
Yesterday afternoon, the girl remained in an induced coma. The boy was later airlifted to the Children’s Hospital at Westmead for emergency surgery.
All are believed to be Kempsey locals, a police media spokesman said.
Police from the Mid North Coast Local Area Command and the Port Macquarie Crash Investigation Unit attended the scene and in their inquiries, they intend to speak with the car’s registered owner.
“It is understood the teenage driver was the holder of a NSW learner’s permit and was not accompanied by a licensed driver at the time of the crash,” the spokesman said.
A report is being prepared for the coroner.
