Rain band heading south

THE storm front is shifting but warnings remain in place for flash flooding.

Torrential rain left water lying across roads on the Coffs Coast.

DUTY forecaster Neil Fraser says the rain band that caused so much damage on the Coffs Coast is moving south west.

But the severe weather warning would remain in place for most of Saturday.

“There is still the danger of flash flooding and the chances of heavy falls later today (Saturday) which will more than likely ease by tomorrow,” he said.

“The rain band was fairly localised but now it’s heading toward Kempsey and Port Macquarie"

The Coast was hardest hit by last night's deluge but residents inland at Dorrigo and Bellingen remain isolated.

Landslips on the Waterfall Way between the townships are expected to keep the road closed throughout Saturday and possibly into Sunday.

"There is quite a serious landslip at Gordonville cutting," said Bellingen mayor, Mark Troy.

"The Dorrigo mountain section held up quite well actually.

"I believe people are trying an alternate route to Dorrigo via Summerville's but that road is in a bad way and suitable only for four-wheel drives. You could find yourself in strife if you try going that way."

To the east of Bellingen, the Waterfall Way is inundated at Marx Hill and Cameron's Corner isolating the town to the east and west.

The overnight rainfall of more than 300mm in the area is the sixth deluge of that magnitude this year.  The minor flood warning (6.7m) remains in place.

Further north, the Orara River is expected to peak at 9m at midday and many roads remain cut due to submerged bridges throughout the Valley.

Following Friday's downpour, incredibly, the Orara Valley has recorded more than three metres of rain.

At 5.8m, the Nambucca River remains at minor flood level and is expected to do so until mid afternoon Saturday.
