WEATHER is easing on the Coffs Coast after torrential rain caused almost 40 flood rescues, isolated thousands, and forced the evacuation of dozens of homes in Coffs Harbour.

A spokesperson for the SES said the group has coordinated 39 flood rescues in Coffs Harbour, Urunga and Grafton, and received 378 requests for assistance relating to rescue, evacuation, sandbagging, leaking rooves and damage caused by fallen trees and branches.

On Saturday morning about 12.30am, the SES doorknocked some 40 properties in five streets in Coffs Harbour, with homes evacuated in Goodenough Terrace, Robin Street, Gundagai Place, Gundagai Street and Loaders Lane.

An evacuation centre was established at the Coffs Ex-Services Club.

The SES continues to monitor the welfare of 4,800 people who remain isolated, including 500 people at Darwood on the upper Bellinger River and 500 residents on the upper Kalang River.

The town of Bowraville, which has a population of 900, has been isolated due to moderate flooding.

At Urunga eight low set vans at a caravan park have been relocated to high ground.

The heaviest falls in the 48 hours to 6.30am Saturday were 528mm at Perry Drive in Coffs Harbour and 351mm at Crystal Creek in Bellingen.

Water levels at Coffs Creek peaked at 4.43m at 9pm Friday, with floodwaters flucuating since them with variations in rainfall.

Floodwaters are falling on the Bellinger River after peaking at 7.2m at Bellingen at midnight Friday.

The town of Bellingen remained isolated, with Waterfall Way between Armidale and the Pacific Highway at Raliegh closed, while Lavenders Bridge is closed.

Moderate flooding is occuring on the Orara River, with Bluff Bridge closed by floodwaters, and moderate flooding is occuring.

The victims of the flood should have given help immediately. They must be given basic necessities for those who have their house damaged. Companies should give them some in order for them to rebuild their lives after that tragedy.

So still we wonder why so much property and infrastructure gets frequently damaged during such natural flooding events, but never question those who are responsible for planning and development in our city. It's time our local government leaders take responsibility and put an end to developments that are likely to be flooded in future events. How many years has our Mayor been in council, and how many floods does he have to see?

The Coffs Harbour City Council has to bear a substantial amount of blame for approving development on FLOOD PRONE land.
Look at the site where the new hospital was constructed. During flood events the car park and lower floor FLOODS!
Only one access road in, which floods.
Housing estates which have been approved on sites which flood.
No storm water drainage provided to housing estates, such that each neighbours water flows into adjacent properties!
The list goes on and on.
The council needs to be held legally liable!
The information provided on their web site regarding local road closures was not posted on a timely basis.
Even Bellingen Shire Council provided their local road closures on their web site far ahead of Coffs City Council.
When queried, the response was that we are not a 24/7 organisation!
I suppose floods stop when the staff leave for the day and the lights are turned out.
Even when they did bother to update their web site there was no information regarding local roads around Sawtell/Toormina/roads in the city.
The only way to discover this information was to tune into the local ABC radio station.
One would assume that SOME lessons would have been learnt from the numerous floods which have occurred in the area this year in providing this information to residents.
SURELY THEY CAN DO BETTER!
