Disaster declaration coming

STATE Emergency Services Minister Steve Whan is expected to declare yet another natural disaster for the Coffs Coast, which will enable government financial assistance funds to be released.

By 11am, assessors were already collecting data from around Coffs Harbour in particular.

“We’re working mainly with council but I don’t think it (disaster declaration) will take too long,” said Mr Whan.

“We don’t muck around making declarations, we’ll try and get on with it and make it as quick as we can.

“For some of the infrastructure there, it’s damage on damage,” Mr Whan added, referring to roads and bridges for example that were struck by previous floods and were yet to be repaired before Friday’s onslaught.

Mr Whan was also mindful of the damage suffered by individuals.

“Certainly at first glance it does seem when you get that flash flooding around Coffs Harbour it seems you do get a lot more damage to private property,” he said.
