IT’S difficult to fathom that a place so tranquil, so serene, could hide such a terrible secret.

Out among the rolling hills, lush meadows, steep gorges and sparkling creeks of the Orara Valley, a man has met a dreadful end, his body torn in two.

The lower half was found by a shocked dad and his three kids when they went for a Sunday afternoon frolic at Wayper Creek.

The other half still hasn’t turned up despite two days of exhaustive searching by police and the SES in rugged terrain.

The small legion of emergency services personnel and their convoys of trucks and vehicles seem out of place in this beautiful setting but their presence here is vital if this bizarre mystery is to be solved.

You expect crime scenes to be in grimy streets or urban wastelands; not in paradise only a short drive from Coffs Harbour.

As you wander into the scrub and stroll along the creek bank, the birds are merrily chirping and the water runs freely as if nothing has happened here.

But you can’t help feeling a sense of dread when your thoughts turn to what this poor man, who is yet to be identified, must have gone through in the final moments of his life.

You also spare a thought for the searchers who have the grim task of looking for body parts. It is something no-one should have to do.

You also think about the family yet to be told the tragic news about their loved one. It is all very strange.
