THE treacherous Little Beach in Red Rock should be safer this summer after work began on the lifeguard tower yesterday.
Pre-fabricated concrete blocks were craned down to the beach and lifted to the worksite in the dunes overlooking the two beaches.
Once finished the tower will be 4.8m high and 4m square including the veranda. When Coffs Harbour lifeguards are on duty at the beach during summer they will have it manned by one person who will be able to keep an eye on Little Beach while a second lifeguard on the ground keeps watch.
In that way if there is an issue on Little Beach lifeguards will be able to respond immediately.
The tower was an initiative of Loretta Rigby from Rotary Daybreak and there has been an extensive consultation process between local interest groups, council and the Department of Lands.
