IT'S officially the hottest August Day on record.

The mercury hit a whopping 33 degrees in Coffs Harbour on Monday, and it's still rising.

Duty observer at the Bureau of Meterology Coffs Harbour office, Kellie Hooper, said a front combined with the position of a high is bringing warm wind from Southern and Central Queensland across the Coffs Coast.

"We can expect this to continue today and tomorrow, but we should drop back to fairly normal temperatures by Wednesday," she said.

Ms Hooper said the extreme weather could be linked to Il Nino.
