Backpackers robbed, bashed at Plaza

TWO backpackers were assaulted and robbed at Park Beach Plaza in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The pair, a 30-year-old man and 20-year-old woman, was confronted by two young men of Aboriginal appearance wielding lumps of timber at about 12.30am.

The tourists, who were struck and kicked numerous times, sustained multiple grazes and cuts, and bruising to their heads.

All their valuables were stolen.

Police are asking any person who saw or heard anything to contact Coffs Harbour detectives on 6652 0299.

On Saturday night at 8pm, police arrested a 24-year-old Coffs Harbour man after they tried to break up a fight in the Park Avenue car park.

The man, who was affected by alcohol, turned on the police and resisted arrest. He was arrested and released on bail yesterday morning.
