WEATHER experts say the chance of an El Nino hitting this year has increased - which means extra-dry weather in the south and east of the country.

The Bureau of Meteorology says the computer models show the probability of an El Nino is now "high".

"Computer forecasts show there's very little chance of the development stalling or reversing," said the Bureau's latest weather statement, issued on Wednesday.

El Ninos sweep in from the Pacific Ocean and sometimes bring harsh droughts to Australia.

Pacific sea temperatures are more than one degree warmer than normal, which has led the experts to predict another El Nino.
