Squalls blackout whole region

THOUSANDS of Coffs Coast residents have endured blackouts brought on by the wild weather.

As many as 1500 households on the Northern Beaches were in the dark for much of yesterday when trees struck powerlines near Darlington Park at 10.30am. Power came back at 1.18pm but high winds resulted in two further 30-minute outages.

About 1800 households at Karangi, Upper Orara and Dairyville were without power from 9.30am to noon as Country Energy crews scrambled to pull vegetation from powerlines.

Up to 700 families in Coffs Harbour, Korora and Moonee were blacked out from 8.30pm on Wednesday to 3.40am yesterday when storms brought down powerlines.

A fault on the electricity network in Sapphire's Warrawee Street affected 50 properties between 6.30am and 11am.

If people are aware of any fallen powerlines, damaged poles or trees touching the power network, keep at least eight metres away from them as they could be energised and pose a real danger.

Customers should call Country Energy on 13 20 80 with any concerns or if they experience a power interruption. In the event of an emergency call 000 immediately.
