THE bid to turn Southern Cross University into Australia's largest regional university got a kick along yesterday with a $2 million grant to study the feasibility of the plan.
The study, funded by the Federal Government, will examine the proposal to form a new national university, with SCU and Charles Sturt University as the foundation partners, and one or more other universities also joining.
“It could be the largest university in Australia in five years, depending on who joins,” SCU Vice-Chancellor Paul Clark said from Canberra yesterday.
He said that for the people of Lismore it meant a lot of courses could be offered that were not available before. The university may be able to offer new disciplines like live veterinary science and dentistry, he said.
Students trained in their new professions in the region were more likely to work locally, he said.
