COFFS Harbour RSPCA took in 127 cats and kittens in December, but only found a home for 14.
Now officials are desperately looking for new homes for 17 cats at the shelter who are fully vaccinated, toilet trained, desexed, and microchipped.
And the organisation is once again urging cat owners to desex their pets after being inundated with kittens in recent weeks.
Despite significant publicity surrounding the benefits of desexing, owners still aren't getting the message.
In the 2007-08 financial year RSPCA NSW collected 20,190 cats and kittens. RSPCA NSW CEO Steve Coleman says staff members are devastated by the number of healthy kittens coming in.
Shelters across NSW are near capacity and prospective pet owners are urged to make the RSPCA their first stop. All animals available for adoption can be viewed online at www.adoptapet.com.au.
The Coffs Harbour RSPCA in Dowsett Dr Coffs Harbour is open seven days a week. Monday 10am until 3.30pm, Tuesday 9am until 11am, Wednesday to Saturday 10am until 3.30pm, and Sunday 10am until 2pm.
All kittens and cats are available for $120 from Wednesday, January 7 until Wednesday, January 21, instead of the usual $190.
