IF you need any indication that Christmas is well and truly on its way, look no further than Coffs Harbour's city centre.
Coffs Harbour City Council's own 'elves' were out in force on Sunday to install the centrepiece of this year's CBD decorations - a nine-metre-tall Christmas tree.
The tree is made up of wire cables to create the conical 'tree' shape and will be dressed with 200 metres of red and green LED rope lights, 250 metres of fairy lights, and the whole structure will be topped off with a one-metre-high gold star.
Designed by council engineer, Andrew Gray, the Christmas tree was built with the expertise of local businesses based on an original concept by the Coffs Harbour Chamber of Commerce.
City centre marketing co-ordinator, Simone Howe, said the tree was created around a permanent central pole that will be used throughout the year to display special banners for festivals or businesses.
Ms Howe said the council is hoping city centre businesses join in the Christmas spirit with their own festive decorations.
“If shoppers are attracted into the city centre to see the decorations, they will stay to shop or enjoy the cafes,” Ms Howe said.
The tree lights will be officially lit by Santa and members of the South Sydney Rabbitohs on December 4 at 6pm.
