Laughter Yoga tickles fit bodies
LAUGHING as exercise has come to Coffs Harbour with the world-wide yoga technique now tickling locals.
Laughter Yoga is a combination of simulated laughter, deep yoga breathing and gentle stretching.
This unique form of exercise was founded in India in 1995 by Dr Kataria, who researched laughter and its benefits.
He found positive effects on mental and physical health, relief of stress, depression and anxiety, strengthened immune systems and increased levels of endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers.
As local laughers have found, you don’t need a sense of humour, you don’t have to be happy or tell jokes to laugh. You can learn to laugh for no reason.
“The classes are amazing really,” said one class member.
“There is no need to feel happy, but afterwards you will. We have had some very depressed people come hesitantly and keep coming. “We need to start getting serious about laughter,” instructor Jayne said.
“Life is serious! Dead is serious! Ha! Ha! Ha!”
Laughter yoga classes are held every fortnight at the Cavanbah Centre in Coffs Harbour with the next class on November 13.
