Urunga Surf Life Saving Club suspended for 12 months

THE FUTURE of Urunga Surf Life Saving Club is under a cloud after the organisation received a 12 month suspension from the North Coast branch of Surf Lifesaving NSW.

The ban was imposed after Hungry Head beach was closed for a two hour period on Christmas Day when no volunteers were available to patrol.

Urunga president Vanessa Nugent acknowledged the club was at fault but believes the harsh penalty has placed the long term viability of the organisation in jeopardy.

"There's no question that because of circumstance we were not able to meet our obligations for a short period," she said.

"However, members are concerned the penalty was excessive and a meeting has decided to appeal the decision."

Any suspension covers not just surf patrols but participation by members in the competitive season of surf carnivals about to begin.
