Travolta on a high after rehab

AS stints in rehab go it was relatively short, but that didn't diminish John Travolta's joy at being free as a bird yet again.

John Travolta is a pelican who was found unable to fly at Bonville Creek on January 25.

He was taken to Dolphin Marine Magic (DMM) by WIRES volunteers where tests revealed he was suffering from avian botulism which is a paralytic condition caused by the consumption of of a toxic bacteria. It is often fatal in birds.

DMM's veterinarian Dr Duan March said John Travolta was lucky to have been taken into care.

"There are several factors which may contribute to outbreaks of botulism," Dr March said.

"The major risk factor is an increased amount of organic material or waste in the water so it is important to keep waterways clean to prevent outbreaks of this deadly disease occurring."

During his time in care John Travolta received antibiotics and hydration, and most importantly a safe haven to get back on the wing.

He was released on Tuesday morning not far from where he was found but with a much brighter prognosis for a long and healthy life.
